چکیده

0. Introduction This paper argues for the significance of argument structure and linear order in the binding conditions of Balinese (an Austronesian language with about 3,000,000 speakers, primarily on the islands of Bali and western Lombok, Indonesia). Our analysis employs the theory of prominence due to Bresnan (1995a,b). We show that linear order, thematic prominence, and the term/oblique distinction are crucial to Balinese binding, while other aspects of syntactic rank (e.g. SUBJ versus OBJ) play little or no role. We propose to define binding at a level of argument structure incorporating the term/oblique distinction (following Manning 1994).

An ‎E‎ffective Numerical Technique for Solving Second Order Linear Two-Point Boundary Value Problems with Deviating Argument

Based on reproducing kernel theory, an effective numerical technique is proposed for solving second order linear two-point boundary value problems with deviating argument. In this method, reproducing kernels with Chebyshev polynomial form are used (C-RKM). The convergence and an error estimation of the method are discussed. The efficiency and the accuracy of the method is demonstrated on some n...

Locative-related Roles and the Argument-Adjunct Distinction in Balinese

This paper uses the realisation of locative-related roles in Balinese to show that there is no clear-cut distinction between arguments and adjuncts, supporting the gradient nature of grammatical functions (cf. Croft 2001; Langacker 1987; Aarts 2007). It argues that argumenthood is not wholly a property of a lexical head predicate and that a purely lexically based projectionist approach to synta...

The Effect of Dynamic Assessment of Toulmin Model through Teacher- and Collective-Scaffolding on Argument Structure and Argumentative Writing Achievement of Iranian EFL Learners

Considering the paramount importance of writing logical arguments for college students, this study investigated the effect of dynamic assessment (DA) of Toulmin model through teacher- and collective-scaffolding on argument structure and overall quality of argumentative essays of Iranian EFL university learners. In so doing, 45 male and female Iranian EFL learners taking part in the study were r...

L1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners

This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...
